A Letter From Ms. Currie

Hello West Aurora Choir Students and Families,

My name is Ms. Currie, and I am the new Assistant Director of Choirs at West Aurora High School. I will teach Bel Canto Choir, Lyric Chorus, Acabelles, STUDyhall, and three sections of Digital Music Production I and II. I am excited to begin the 2019-2020 school year and to meet you—the students and families that make West Aurora a welcoming community of tradition and pride.

I bring a host of experiences to West. In the 2018-2019 school year, I was Director of Choirs at LaSalle-Peru High School in LaSalle, Illinois, where I led a program of approximately 100 students. Before teaching, I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in May 2018 (I-L-L!). At Illinois, I was the president and undergraduate assistant conductor of Women’s Glee Club. I also performed with the UI Chamber Singers in Vienna and Budapest in collaboration with the Conservatory at the University of Vienna.

Before college, I started my choir journey as a Blackhawk at West Aurora High School. At West, I sang in Lyric Chorus, Acabelles, A Cappella Choir, and Madrigal Singers. I studied choral music under three incredible choir directors in my time at West: Mrs. Papadolias, Mr. McLear, and Ms. Hutchinson. I am excited to continue their legacy alongside my teammate, Mr. Smith, who mindfully maintains tradition while intermeshing modern elements to match today’s students’ needs.

I come to West with a strong emphasis on building ensemble community, strengthening sight-singing and music theory skills, and educating the whole child. I believe in meeting students where they are and helping them foster a community and create art of which they are proud. I cannot wait to see the progress our students make this year.

Students and families, please feel free to contact me. Communication is key, and I want to hear from you! I am always willing to talk about how great your child is. Lastly, if there are any issues regarding a student feeling safe in the classroom, please contact me immediately.

Let’s have a great year!

Warmly,

Ms. Currie
